The plane, one of the CT-114 Tutor jets built by Canadair in the 1960s, is one of only four known to be in private hands.

'If you've been to an air show, you've seen the Snowbirds perform,' Terry Lobzun from Collector Car Productions in Ontario, told CBC News on Thursday. Lobzun said the plane was used by the Snowbirds in the 1990s and all of its logs and other documentation are part of the sale. Canadair built 190 CT-114s, which were originally used as trainer aircraft. The plane joined the aerial demonstration squadron when it was formed as the Snowbirds in the 1970s. Lobzun said the current owner was simply ready to sell. Lobzun said the person who buys the plane will be acquiring a project, but added it is airworthy. 'This particular aircraft is in a private collection, just outside of Toronto,' Lobzun explained.

'It does need some work and certainly people familiar with aircraft will know what it's all about,' he said. If the new owner wanted to actually fly it, they would have to find and install a new engine as the original was removed after having reached the end of its service life. 'It's a very popular engine, called a J-85, and they're still available out there,' he noted.

Otherwise, the plane is intact with all the familiar markings of the Snowbird demonstration squadron. 'It would be a lot of fun, even if you wanted to park it your backyard and play Top Gun with your kids,' he said. 'But we're hoping it will find a home.' He said he expected a museum, flying club, or pilot might be interested in acquiring the plane. He characterized the estimated auction price, around $50,000 to $60,000, as ' quite reasonable'. 'Somebody's who going to buy will know what it needs,' he said.

'It's still a very important part of Canada's aviation history.' 'It's the only one that we know of that's available,' he said, noting there are only three other Snowbird jets in private hands and at one point actor and aviation enthusiast John Travolta had one. The auction, which will include a number of other vintage transportation items, is set for Mississauga, Ont., April 8-10.
