The graphics are beautiful, a lot of love has gone into creating this game, turn off the light and you will be taken into the world on your computer screen. Enjoyed the hint system (search for ravens in-game to acquire extra hints) One negative aspect: All the pop text! Cringe worthy, almost enough to make me click the game off after 15 minutes of gameplay. If you can ignore the pop up boxes, you have a great little game! Rated 5 out of 5 by Dargonnoone from One of the best I purchased this game in desperation trying to find a game that would absorb me for a while. It didn't disappoint. Such good value for money.
A long game with extra hints to find and clovers to locate in each scene, sometimes two. The storyline was really interesting and a couple of times I nearly fell out of my seat with surprise.
Most of the games were unusual. The mechanics were sometimes slightly clunky but I can forgive that for the enjoyment I received. I'm sure that at sometime in the future I will play this game again and again. Rated 5 out of 5 by MSecaur from My new favorite! A chilling and immersive historical Hidden Object game! I thought it would be hard to find a game to top 'The Yellow Room', but 'Midnight Mysteries: Haunted Houdini' does! For someone who likes a little history, mystery and adventure mixed into their Hidden Object games, this one could not have been any better.
I was entranced from beginning to end, and wouldn't hesitate to say that this is the best game I've ever played from BigFish Games. It just kept getting better and better, and just when I thought that I had reached the end, a new twist was added that kept things going! Despite being the fourth entry in the 'Midnight Mysteries' series, I played this one first, and without question it spoiled the others for me. 'Houdini' really trumps them all, in every category. The graphics are amazing, the sound effects and music are clear and good quality, and the atmosphere.Well, let's just say this isn't a game you'd want to be playing in a dark house all by yourself!
As a self-proclaimed history nut as well as someone who knows Houdini's life story very well, I found the storyline thrilling; and, even though games like this take a certain amount of suspension of disbelief, right up until the final bonus chapter, extremely logical. Until that point I totally believed in everything that was going on. Sure, some of the stuff might be a little unbelievable, but I still really enjoyed how hard the developers worked to keep a level of historical accuracy. How cool is it to be able to interview Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and consort with Bess Houdini? The gameplay was also fantastic. Never have I felt so involved in a computer game.
As weird as this sounds, at certain points I became so totally immersed that I literally felt as though I had been transported back in time and were truly investigating the truth behind Houdini's demise. Another bonus for me was the opportunity to perform and be a part of many of Houdini's tricks in several excessively diverting minigames. So for history buffs and magic aficionados alike, this one ticks all the boxes.
Not to say that I don't like hidden object games, but sometimes that facet is over-represented to the point of tedium. This game was a refreshing mix of searches, mystery, exploring, history, and clever but not frustrating puzzles that make you think, just how I like it, and that actually go towards furthering the plot, something many HO games drop the ball on. To conclude, if you're looking for an easy, relatively uninvolved game you can finish in an hour, this isn't the one for you. But if you like a longer, more intriguing game that you can really sink your teeth into, than by all means don't pass this one up! Rated 5 out of 5 by JustTheFacts from Marvellous Midnight Mystery! BASED ON COMPLETED GAME FIRST IMPRESSIONS I adore this series, with its unique style in visuals and the complex and compelling stories.
I even love the raven. This game differs somewhat from the norm, and is even better than the others (which were all exceptional).
It has been released as a “Deluxe” Edition, so the extras – the bling! – you might say, are here at a standard edition price. It’s a great pity that this style of edition didn’t take off. DELUXE BLING! Quite a good package here. There is an in-game Strategy Guide (which is done differently by this developer, and is far easier to see and understand). There are 2 collectibles.
The ravens (52) are extra hints, and clovers (40 out of 70 are needed to unlock the unlimited mode). In this extra, you get to revisit HOPs from the game, and find the full list of EVERY item in them. You are rated by time taken, for 3 awards (gold silver bronze). There are also achievements. Not many, but a couple of them are interesting. Clovers can be found all over the place, including HOP scenes, and sometimes are very small and rudimentary.
SIGHTS & SOUNDS Beautiful graphics. I love the way these games are put together. I have seen no game ever that has the same look and feel.
Cut-scenes, from the very first, are amazing electrifying and occasionally startling. I lost count how many times I jumped and flinched. And I’ve played the half a dozen times! The game really is quite creepy, it’s just that gameplay is so intriguing, I get a little ‘lost to the world’. I also love the convincing details of the widely varying locations and epochs. The music, too, is unique and has a wonderful creepy tone from time to time. I loved the special effects.
No voiceovers. WHAT’S HAPPENING Houdini was well known for having a thing about fake mediums and psychics. He debunked a lot of very unhappy people. He made a pact with his wife that if there really was a way to contact the living after his death, he would contact her and they would use a code to make sure it was really him. All this is true, at least, part of the Houdini legend. The game starts with Mrs Houdini’s ghost seeking your help to find Harry’s, because even after her own death she has been unable to contact him. The story is, Houdini was murdered, and you must travel through time and space to visit those people who he knew who might want him dead.
It is a great departure from the usual fare offered in HOPA’s but still very much in keeping with this series. MAKING PROGRESS An emphasis on HOPs, each an interactive list, and visited twice. Puzzles are okay, there is not too many of them. The adventure part is helped along by a perhaps too helpful hint that tells you exactly what to do next. There is no map.
Skip, is pretty slow if you want to give up on those puzzles. CRUX OF THE MATTER I love every Midnight Mystery produced, and this one just gives me goose bumps!
Rated 5 out of 5 by knucklebones from Eerie & highly entertaining I bought this game because of my interest in Houdini and Conan Doyle and was surprised to find I enjoyed every minute of it. It's very well-imagined, with excellent graphics and sound, puzzles that are intriguing but not too demanding, and so few classic Hidden Object scenes that they were a surprise when they did appear. It's a clever Adventure game with Fragmented Objects. I didn't find the scenes as dark as BFG's screenshots suggest: they're colourful and moody. Objects are well-placed, beautifully drawn and of good size - no endless peering at my pc screen, thankfully! And (with the exception of one modern camera) all items were correct for the period, which is another big positive for me. The devs have really done their homework in getting people and places looking right, even down to the image of Doyle's Surrey home 'Undershaw'.
Given the spooky storyline of ghosts and Spiritualism I wouldn't call it a 'fun' ride, but it was highly entertaining and imaginative throughout. All the characters and scenes are intriguing and the game has a perfect story arc with a satisfying conclusion. Harry Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are particular heroes of mine so I was relieved to find that the game didn't disrespect them. Although I don't hold with the game's conspiracy theory surrounding Houdini's death, it wasn't insulting to his memory.
Much credit to the developers for that. The game play is logical so I only had to refer to the inbuilt Strategy Guide a couple of times. The SG is comprehensive though it doesn't keep up with your progress. I was a bit miffed however that it didn't give the solution to the final 2-part puzzle, half of which was so 'simple' that it baffled me! The Hint system's based on collecting ravens in each location and I found the hints helpful but not too hand-holding.
I'll be buying more 'Midnight Mysteries' based on my total enjoyment of this one. Highly recommended so long as you're comfortable with ghosts, Spiritualism and the supernatural. Rated 5 out of 5 by denniann2 from a terrific game of course is about houdini and how his wife has tried to get in touch with him on the anniversary of his death through the years.
It was a pact they made so she would know there is an afterlife. Her ghost comes to you to find out what happened and why she can't contact him. You investigate his death and find some things out that she is not aware of. I didn't even know some of them if i was even aware of them. Played casual, no sound.
You collect ravens for clues and 4 leaf clovers to unlock the unlimited hidden object mode. Skip/hint charge slowly so don't be surprised there.
Rated 5 out of 5 by EnvirEng from Great Game, Great Story This HO/Adventure game is just about perfect. The graphics are fantastic.
The ambiance is wonderfully appropriate (artillery fire in the WWII scene, for example). Sound is awesome, too.
You travel to different locations in different times, talking to ghosts and solving problems to discover who killed Harry Houdini. And appropriately, the game has a little magic thrown in, which I always like. The HO scenes are very well done. Some items are listed, as they are, some require interaction and some are worded as riddles. For me, that was fun. There are a lot of different locations and once each is finished you move on to the next site, so no getting lost or wearing out your shoes. In most scenes, you can find a hidden four leaf clover and a crow.
You start with a certain number of hints and each crow you find, adds one. I think I finished with 23 hints left, so no worries. When you get enough clovers, the game unlocks HOS's to replay. Very fun, since you have to find EVERY item in the scene. The story is interesting and involved. So many people could have been the killer! My only complaint is that the story got a bit too involved, for me.
Overall, this is a wonderful game and I highly recommend it. Rated 5 out of 5 by smuckers820 from ABSOLUTELY SUPERB! This is one of the best games I have EVER played! Everything about it was spectacular! There are so many positive things about this game.
The visuals were sharp. It was so fun to be able to participate in Houdini's, (as well as the other magician's), tricks. It was like you were part of a magic show, playing a game, and a detective with a mystery to solve - all rolled up in one! The storyline was cohesive and kept the story moving along at a steady pace. There were different levels of challenges, whereas you have your standard HO scenes, clover leaves to gather for extended extra HO scenes at the end of the game, and of course your ravens to find to accumulate hints. Some may not particularly like that particular feature of the game.
I wasn't certain I would. But they were plentiful enough where you wouldn't run out of them. But if you did, check this out - THERE IS AN EXTRA GUIDE TO HELP YOU EVERY STEP OF THE WAY! That was totally freakin' awesome! You had your standard diary that told of your thoughts and events. Then there was the other guide that told you everything else - including where the clovers were, the ravens, how to successfully complete the mini games and how to get through the tricks if you needed assistance. This game was totally enjoyable and perfect for any levels of expertise.
YOU HAVE TO BUY THS ONE! You will NOT be disappointed! Rated 5 out of 5 by godfreygirl from I really LOVED this game!! What a fun game! It was so entertaining and interesting during the trial that I paid full price to get it. It's the first HO game I've really loved playing in a long time. I gave up on them a few weeks ago and cancelled my BF membership, but then this one came up.
It had an interesting story line and I usually skip through all the dialog, but not with this one. It also helped me through with the guide book.I couldn't have made it without it.but it was fun to play anyway.
Everything about this game was fun, interesting and challenging. The graphics are beautiful and clear, the HO games are not so difficult that it makes it too hard to enjoy. I loved everything about it and finished it in one day.doing things in-between and then coming back to it. I'll probably play this one again and again. I highly recommend it. Rated 5 out of 5 by sfr8rfan from Masterful! This is absolutely my new favorite game of all time.
Well conceived storyline which was driven throughout the game. No wasted steps, no unnecessary games. Everything moved you to the goal. Visually the game is stunning. It is crystal clear viewing. The story, the HOGs, the mini-games.the were all like watching movies. I've never seen a better looking game.
The music was also right on par with the visuals. It was perfectly designed, chosen and applied. When things got more exciting, the music got more exciting. The HOGs were challenging and took some work to complete but it was a pleasure. It wasn't because objects weren't able to be seen because of fuzziness. It was very clear.
It was hard at times because the items were very well placed. Some of the mini games were TOO easy.
That is the closest thing to a negative I can come up with. This was just a brilliantly conceived and executed game IMO. There are a couple of additional games within the game which also keep you on your toes. These show up as you try to accomplish the 'achievements.'
While not central to the story, the don't interfere, they just add another fun aspect. I have played a couple of duds recently (in my mind they were nothing more than HOGs and not good ones at that) but this is hardly a dud. It's brilliant and I can't wait to play the other offerings from the Midnight Mysteries gang. Finally, the concept of DELUXE is excellent: it costs the same as an SE but includes the strategy guide. Consequently, you don't have to spend twice the money for a CE to get the 'wallpaper' and other 'who cares?' Things when all you really want is the guide.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Nana6177 from Near Perfection! What a fabulous game! For a SE price you get achievements, strategy guide, unlimited HO scenes at after you collect 40 clovers (and you don’t need to complete the game).
The only thing that did not make this 100% perfect is lack of voice over. Length of play is approximately 4 hours. Not sure if the story is based on fact or fiction, it revolves around the death of Houdini. There are ghost, secret societies, and villains.just plain fun. The story keeps moving never letting up; you will want to finish this in one sitting.
There is excitement and intrigue all the way through with a lot of adventure and searching. There are chapters and you are automatically “teleported” when you finish one to go to another. The HO scenes are cluttered but not a junk pile.
Items are not minuscule; there is interaction in each HO scene. There is maybe a dozen or less HO scenes (I didn’t count). Some items are not specifically named, there is word association (that was fun!), it added a new level of interest to HO. Quite a few puzzles, some of which I have never seen before (what fun that was!). Graphics are not up to the standard of say “Royal Detective: The Lord of Statues” but that is forgiven for the fabulous story line.
Music is not intrusive more subliminal. Inventory items can be combined to create one item Dev.’s take note this is what all SE’s should be! Rated 5 out of 5 by GrrlScientist from a truly magical game on so many levels in real life, Harry Houdini did die a peculiar death. But in this hidden object puzzle thriller, the game developers' idea is that Houdini was actually murdered. So your goal in this game is to find the truth behind Houdini's death - and to reunite the spirits of Houdini and his wife, Bess, in the afterlife.

Graphics: detailed and beautifully rendered. Nice cutscenes and a few startling moments that may set you back in your chair. Instead of writing a story solely to string together a series of hidden objects scenes, the hidden objects scenes are an integral part of the overall story and it’s obvious that the items in these scenes were carefully chosen. The hidden object scenes are visually pleasing and interesting to look at; few of them were HO junk piles that are so overdone in so many of these games. Some of the hidden objects required some imagination and a little more effort, such as combining two objects to make a third.
One annoyance: some of the objects inexplicably popped up in a small window in the middle of the screen when you clicked on them so you had to click on the pop-up to get the item into your inventory - what is that about? This game gives you a nice blend between hidden objects scenes and puzzles. The puzzles and mini-games were different than usual - varied, interesting and sometimes challenging.
The game also includes card and magic tricks, which are a lot of fun, even when you know how the illusion is done. Most scenes have ravens in them which, when clicked, add hints to your hint meter (1 hint per raven). If you are a hidden object addict, you will be pleased to learn that most scenes have clovers hidden in them too and when you collect 40 or more of the 70 total, you unlock unlimited hidden objects scenes for a gratifying HO overdose. There is no map, although there is little opportunity to get lost, and there is a useful diary.
This game is unique amongst non-CE games that i've played thus far because it includes a very helpful strategy guide, which is what 'deluxe' is all about, i guess. Not only is a strategy guide a fabulous feature that is more typical of the more expensive CE versions, but it's embedded in the game, so it’s accessible with just one click. The strategy guide really opens up this game to all skill levels, from first-time game players to jaded pros. Further, i've always enjoyed looking at game strategy guides - i imagine they look a lot like the game developers' storyboards, so it was interesting for me to shift between the game and the strategy guide.
Another fun feature of this game is that you can earn 'achievements' during gameplay, which adds replay value. Music and sound effects: the music is haunting but non-intrusive and adds to the ambience. The sound effects are realistic and help create the illusion that you are actually.there. Storyline: well-plotted and developed. It’s ironic that the developers chose to have ghosts and the afterlife as subjects of this game when in real life, Houdini devoted his later years debunking these sorts of hocus-pocus. My interaction: one hour demo, casual mode (this game has three modes of play; casual, advanced and hardcore).

I am so impressed with this game at so many levels that i have added it to my 'must purchase' list. Whilst i wait for a sale (i don't totally destroy my games budget), i am going to play the other midnight mystery games to see if i enjoy those as much as this one! Rated 5 out of 5 by Rozzerdog from A must have game Before I begin my review, I just wanted to let it be known that I have been performing close-up magic and mentalism for about 14 years now.
I've also been downloading and playing games here at Big Fish Games for about 5-6 months now, and I have never been as excited about a game as I have for this one, Midnight Mysteries: Haunted Houdini Deluxe. This game is practically a Collector's Edition for the price of a standard game version. Which is not at all what I expected, but once I started playing, I noticed immediately that the strategy/walk through guide is exactly what you get with a collectors edition version, so that's another plus why I love this game so much.
Now, let's get into the review of this wonderful game, shall we? The story line for this game is quite an interesting take on the death of Harry Houdini, which is well known to just about anybody who would care to look into it.
But the fact that the creators put a murder mystery plot behind his death, is of course, the main driving force behind what you are trying to accomplish as you play a detective. The music is top notch in this game, and with enough variety that you don't become annoyed with the same looping piece of music. The graphics and animation are another favorite of mine, smooth and crisp, along with some frightening animations that I won't go into detail about, you'll have to be surprised when they appear, and probably jump back in your chair the same way I did. Since I mentioned that this game is virtually a Collectors Edition game, you are also given the task to find and collect little green clovers that are both hidden quite well, as well as a few which are easy to notice. There are 70 in total, but what you'll really want to focus on, besides having completed all accomplishments, but after you collect 40 of them, you then unlock a really cool feature, Unlimited Hidden Object mode. Which is also used to help you complete further achievements, not to mention it gives you A LOT of practice on how quickly you can find all of the hidden objects. Well, there we have it folks, a truly fun and amazingly entertaining from beginning to end, a game that you will want to play more than once because it really is that much fun.
Rated 5 out of 5 by rrboudin from It's No Mystery. That this is an excellent game! I've absolutely loved all the Midnight Mysteries games, staring with the Salem Witch Trials version. This game asks you to unravel the mystery surrounding the famous magician Harry Houdini's suspicious death. The graphics are crisp, clean, and not too dark. They storyline is superb and it has a few make-you-jump moments. It's very convenient that the Deluxe Edition includes the in-game strategy guide in case you get stuck.
There are three different ways to play depending on your experience with these types of games. Hope you enjoy it! I know I have and will continue to in the future. Rated 5 out of 5 by hbgroadends from Another excellent game in the Midnight Mysteries genre I have played all of the Midnight Mysteries games, and each one gets better and better. Haunted Houdini is an excellent mix of both HOG scenes and puzzles, so it is sure to please both HOG lovers and puzzle lovers. The developers did a fabulous job with the puzzles. Instead of the standard ones that appear in most games, they took the time to develop new and inventive puzzles that were challenging, but not impossible to solve.
I didn't have to skip any puzzle because it was boring or too hard. The story line, as usual, was very well thought out and engaging, holding your interest throughout the story. The mix of historical facts and fiction made for a very entertaining game. The graphics and sound were also well done as usual.
HOG objects were well-defined and of appropriate size. The music added to the atmosphere of the game without being annoying or repetitive. The developers give players the option of selecting from three different challenge levels at the beginning of the game, depending on the player's need for assistance. The easiest mode allows for sparkles to assist players and you collect ravens to increase the hints as you need them; the middle level eliminates sparkles, but you still can collect ravens; the most advanced level eliminates the ravens.
You still get a hint, but it takes time to recharge. This is the first 'deluxe' game I've seen put out with an integrated strategy guide available for a regular game price. High marks to the developer for including it in the game. I only had to refer to it a couple of times, but it was sure nice to have when I needed it. Final verdict-I will continue to buy every game that comes out in the MM series, and look forward to any other games made by this developer. They continually and consistently put out excellent, high quality games that are inventive, challenging, and fun to play.

The fact that they released this game as a 'deluxe' edition instead of a collector's edition tells me they are listening to their customers who desire the strategy guide, but don't want all the extraneous stuff that comes with the typical CE. Check this game out, as well as the other Midnight Mysteries games. They are well worth the money to play. Rated 5 out of 5 by ffuryy50 from Best Game So Far In This Series Enjoyed this one thoroughly. Not too many HOG scenes; great story line; held my attention the whole way through; really looking forward to the next one in this series. Was able to figure out what to do with very little help but needed my brain throughout. I love the ones that I can figure out with some effort but no frustration.
There's enough frustration in RL as it is!;) I never listen to the music in the games so I can't comment on that but I rate the rest highly. I rated the level of challenge as a '4' so that those who like spending hours figuring out a game won't be fooled.;) All I can say to tie this all up is.
